Last class you learned to recognize warning signs and to notice sign blindness, the way a sign you walk past every day quietly stops registering. That's not a flaw in a specific sign. It's a limit of what any sign can do: a sign only works in the instant someone actually looks at it, reads it, and reacts in time.

So before reaching for a sign, ask a better question first: can the hazard itself be changed so that forgetting, rushing, or not noticing doesn't lead to an injury? Today's activity walks through five real shop situations and asks that question directly.

Not Every Hazard Ends the Same Way

Notice the pattern across the five stations. The extension cord and the exposed belt disappeared as hazards once the room and the machine were redesigned, no sign required. The hot plate kept part of its danger but changed what the sign was actually protecting. The unlabeled chemicals couldn't be fixed by changing the room at all, because the hazard travels with the container. The label had to move with it. The rolling object showed that even a simple change to storage, such as a tray, cradle, or edge stop, can remove the need to repeatedly remind people to keep items away from the edge.

The real skill here is asking every time whether a hazard can be pushed up the hierarchy before you ever rely on a sign, or on someone remembering to be careful.

Part 2 · The Last Line of Defense

PPE: Protection With Limits

Elimination and engineering controls can't remove every hazard from a working shop. What's left over is the job of the person: the gear you wear and the habits you keep. Start with the gear.

Personal Protective Equipment

What Is PPE?

PPE stands for Personal Protective Equipment: anything worn on the body to reduce someone's exposure to a hazard. It's the bottom tier of the hierarchy you just learned, the last thing standing between a person and an injury after every other option has already been tried.

Let's look at some examples of PPE. For each category, name at least one example you've seen or used, and the hazard it's meant for.

Eye & Face

Safety glasses, goggles, face shields...

Work gloves, cut-resistant or chemical-resistant gloves...

The Core Idea
PPE can reduce injury.
It does not remove the hazard.

Glasses don't stop a blade. Gloves don't neutralize an unknown chemical. Earplugs don't make a machine quieter for the next person in the room. PPE only works if it's the right type, it fits, it's worn correctly, and it's worn every single time, and even then, it only covers what it was designed to cover.

For each situation, work through three questions in order.

    What PPE is appropriate? Name the gear that actually belongs in this situation.

    What does it protect? Be specific about the body part and the hazard.

    What does it not protect? This is the important one. Name the hazard the PPE can't touch.
After those three, we'll add one more: Better Control. What change, higher up the hierarchy, would matter even to someone who wasn't wearing anything at all?
Worked Example

Grinding Metal

Hazard A spinning abrasive wheel throws sparks and metal fragments, and runs loud the whole time it's on.
PPE Safety glasses or a face shield, plus hearing protection.
What It Protects Eyes and face from flying particles, hearing from the noise.
What It Doesn't Fix Hands placed too close to the wheel, loose clothing or hair that can catch, a damaged or improperly mounted wheel, or a bystander standing in the line of fire or their hearing.

A wheel guard and tool rest keep hands and stray sparks away from the wheel no matter what anyone is wearing. Inspecting the wheel before use and keeping bystanders out of the spark path are rules, not gear, and PPE can't stand in for either.

The Last Column Is the Real Answer

Look back at how often Better Control pointed at a guard, a label, a rack, or a rule, the same kinds of fixes from Beyond the Sign. That's not a coincidence. PPE is what you fall back on once elimination, substitution, and engineering controls have already done as much as they can, not a substitute for trying them first.

Wearing the right gear is still non-negotiable. It just isn't the whole plan.

Part 3 · The Person in the Room

Safe Behavior

Even the best-guarded machine and the right PPE still depend on the choices you make in the moment. Everything from here on comes down to one question.

What does a safe worker do before, during, and after a task?

The Three Phases

Every task in this shop has three phases, and safe behavior looks different in each one.

Before

  • Check the area, equipment, and PPE.
  • Confirm you understand the task and the instructions.
  • Know where emergency equipment is located.
  • Remove distractions; secure loose clothing and hair.
  • Report anything damaged or unusual before you start.

During

  • Use equipment only as intended, with guards in place.
  • Maintain control of materials.
  • Stay aware of others working around you.
  • No horseplay, no distracting anyone at a running machine.
  • Stop when something doesn't look or feel right.

After

  • Shut down equipment correctly.
  • Wait for moving or hot parts to become safe.
  • Clean the area and return tools.
  • Dispose of materials properly.
  • Report damage or problems before you leave.

Each situation is a real moment where a shortcut is tempting. For every one, answer four questions in order.

    Why might someone make that choice? The temptation is always real. Name it honestly.

    What should the person do instead? Name the safe move, specifically.

Watch for the pattern in your own answers. It shows up again and again.

Stop. Make it safe. Ask for help.
The Hardest Skill
Anyone may stop a task when they believe something is unsafe.
Stopping is not overreacting. It is part of the job.

This is called stop work authority, and it applies to everyone in this room, not just the instructor. You don't need to be certain something is dangerous. You just need to believe it might be, and say so.

Every situation on the last slide had the same real answer underneath it: speaking up is often the hardest behavior to practice, and the one this room needs most.

Write a Safety Code of Conduct

With a partner, write five rules for safe behavior in this shop. Every rule must be observable: something another person could actually watch you do or not do.
