What Is Mechatronics?

Where This Class Fits

This class is called Honors Robotics and Engineering Technologies 1. It's part of the Automation and Robotics CTE Program, and the curriculum we'll be using all year is called Mechatronics.

So, what exactly are we going to be learning this year?

The Working Definition

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary field of engineering that integrates mechanical, electrical, computer, and control engineering to design and develop intelligent machines and systems.

In other words, it's the convergence of different engineering disciplines working together to create systems that perform complex tasks with greater precision, efficiency, and adaptability.

A mechatronics engineer is a jack-of-all-trades, with real working knowledge across every discipline in the mix.

The Mechatronics Engineer

A Mechatronics Engineer focuses on creating machines and systems that improve efficiency and productivity across industries. They design, develop, and test automation, intelligent systems, and smart devices that integrate mechanical, electrical, computer, and control systems.

What Is Mechatronics?

One Machine -> Five Systems

A mechatronic system, like a robot arm, a car's cruise control, or a 3D printer, brings together five kinds of systems:

  • Mechanical systems: moving parts and structures.
  • Electrical systems: power, motors, and sensors.
  • Computing systems: microcontrollers and code.
  • Control systems: feedback loops and precision.
  • Interface systems: screens, inputs, and connectivity.

A mechatronics engineer needs to understand how these systems interact, but they usually specialize in one area while collaborating closely with:

  • Mechanical engineers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Software developers

Your Task: Write the Manual

Your next job is to write the manual for your robot arm.

    Think: What does someone need to know in order to use your robot arm successfully?

    Plan: What operations will the user need to perform, and what steps should they follow to operate the arm safely and effectively?

    Write: As a group, create a written user manual using only words. No diagrams, yet.
Divide the work so each team member is responsible for a specific section.

You may use AI to help edit your writing, but there are important rules.

What You Must Do First

  • Write your full first draft of the user manual on your own.
  • Each team member is clearly responsible for their section.
  • Do not use AI to write your section from scratch.

How You Can Use AI, After Writing

You may paste your own writing into an AI tool, like ChatGPT, to:

  • Improve clarity or grammar.
  • Make instructions easier to understand.
  • Reword sentences without changing the meaning.
If you use AI, copy the edits over your original work so your writing history still shows up in the Google Docs version history.
Policies

Acceptable Use of AI 2 / 2

Not Allowed

  • Using AI to generate your entire section before writing anything yourself.
  • Submitting AI-generated content as your own thinking.
  • Removing or replacing your original draft to hide that AI was used.
Why This Matters

This assignment helps you practice engineering communication, a real skill that AI can support, but not replace. Think of AI as a tool, not a shortcut.

One More Thing

Unacceptable Use of AI

When I was explaining this lesson to ChatGPT to get its input, its first response was:

"The Robot Arm Challenge is a perfect springboard into a unit on engineering communication, because even the best ideas fall flat without clear articulation."

It is unacceptable to have AI write jokes. It violates the first law of robotics.
